Less is more

Less is more

Minimalism is a concept that has long floated around the design and arts world. The enduring trend has risen to prominence again in recent years, perhaps due to the hectic nature of our current more is more lifestyle. Minimalism most notably gained worldwide recognition in the 1960s in London and New York.

The concept of minimalism was originally inspired by the ancient Japanese art of wabi-sabi. This set of traditional Japanese aesthetics entertains the philosophy of acceptance, embracing the impermanence and imperfection of objects, spaces, and general design.

Have you ever noticed how beautiful objects surrounded by clutter tend to lose their significance, whereas the same objects surrounded by space are easier to appreciate? This is because a minimalist environment ensures that the object we are meant to focus our attention on is free from distraction.

Characteristics of minimalism include cool lighting, and large open spaces with minimal objects and furniture. Minimalism can apply to many different areas of art and design, from interiors to product design to graphic design.

To deny the unnecessary and focus on clear and almost purely functional spaces is rewarding. After all, as Steve Jobs once said, “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”.
